Mt. Lebanon Student Writers Earn National Recognition Through NCTE Programs

Student writers across the Mt. Lebanon School District earned national recognition for their creativity, voice, and excellence in writing through programs hosted by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Students from Mt. Lebanon High School, Mellon Middle School, and Jefferson Middle School were recognized in the NCTE Awards in Writing Program and the Promising Young Writers Program, which celebrate outstanding student writing from across the United States and around the world.

Jefferson Middle School Promising Young Writers Program Award Winners

Mellon Middle School Promising Young Writers Program Award Winners

• Emma Heisel — First Class
• Luke Himmler — First Class
• Natalie Larsen — First Class

Emma Heisel also earned a perfect judge’s score, an achievement that will result in her writing being published on the NCTE award webpage and potentially featured through NCTE social media channels and newsletters. This marks the first time in nearly 30 years of participation that a Mt. Lebanon School District student has received this distinction.

National judges evaluated submissions based on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. This year’s competition included students from 30 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, South Africa, and South Korea.
